About This Hymn
Great Is Thy Faithfulness was written by Thomas Chisholm in 1923. Unlike many hymns that were born out of tragedy, this hymn was written out of Chisholm’s daily experience of God’s faithfulness.
Chisholm sent the poem to his friend William Runyan, who composed the tune. The hymn became widely known through its use at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.
The text is based on Lamentations 3:22-23: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
